Dramatic fall in part time numbers continues

The latest figures released by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) reveal that the dramatic decline in part time enrolments is continuing, and show a decline of 56% since 2010 – from 243,355 to 107,325. Attempts by government to redress this by, for example, making loans available to part time students have proved inadequate, as a high proportion are ineligible for this financial support. Claire Callender (Birkbeck), quoted in the Guardian Online (2 May 2017), comments that many universities are withdrawing part time provision as a result. This is especially damaging as part time students need for to study in their locality. The main cause of the downturn has been steep fee rises, a problem made worse by the news that universities have been allowed to raise fees annually, and also by the increase in interest rates on student loans.
