Good news from UCAS
After several years of a downward trend in the number of mature students in higher education 2014 figures from UCAS show an increase. More than 100,000 UK students aged 20 and over will be taking higher level courses, a rise of 6% on last year.
The increase is not confined to younger age groups – there has been 7% rise in acceptances from people aged 25 and over.
Les Ebdon, Director of the Office for Fair Access commented:
‘Today’s figures are very encouraging. Mature students are more likely to be from disadvantaged backgrounds so this increase is good news for social mobility, and ultimately for the economy and society as a whole. For many people who did not go to university straight from sixth-form or college, mature study offers a valuable second chance to gain the qualifications they need to succeed in the workplace’.
